We would like everyone to meet Scott & Mel…the two amazingly talented *now* husband and wife team behind the creative agency SAM. These are the magical people behind our rebranding and transition into The Ramsdens and what we are today. To say we are thankful for these two is a understatement and photographing their wedding was such an honor. They were married in mid-November at the Historic Smithville Inn in Galloway, NJ. Since we had never been there before, we arrived the night before their wedding to scope out the location and lighting. After the location scouting we drove about 15 minutes to Long Beach Island where we stayed at a welcoming and empty beach-front inn, dug our toes into the cool sand, and watched the surfers of all ages in their wet suits enjoy the waves in the off-season. The morning of their wedding was gorgeous and sunny with a forecast of 70 degrees. It was complete and total perfection.
We knew from knowing their creative tastes and personalities that their wedding was going to be magical with some really kick ass style. We were right. Scott & Mel’s wedding attire was absolutely flawless. Her dress. His suit. Her shoes. His boots. We could go on forever. (HER FLOWERS. Those ribbons, those colors.)
If you are ever in South Jersey – Historic Smithville is like going down a rabbit hole. There are quirky and quaint shops lined up in bright colors & old architecture at every turn. Throughout the village are little cabins & houses mixed amongst the storefronts that you can rent and stay in. They are seamless in the surroundings and it really makes you feel immersed in the location. Mel and her bridesmaids got ready in a small Victorian styled home just steps away from their hair salon. Beyond that, over a covered bridge, Scott and his guys were getting ready in one of the cabins.
The fall foliage was in the most beautiful state of orange and yellow hues wherever we went. After their first look, and then family & bridal party photographs right at the Smithville Inn – we adventured around the village with their friends and family and photographed the two of them alone. There was a tangible energy in the air and passerby’s congratulated them with beautiful enthusiasm as we journeyed throughout the village. They were married by their friend Kyle who performed an absolutely beautiful, heartfelt, and humorous ceremony filled with puns for Scott’s enjoyment. Their cocktail hour was a warm and inviting atmosphere with drinks and food in plenty. The energy at the reception was bursting at the seams with love, happiness, and FUN. White Rabbit killed it with their renditions of Scott & Mel’s eclectic song choices. In true Jersey form – the Bruce Springsteen sing alongs were pretty legendary. Scott’s sister Casey performed a timeless and beautiful cover of Sam Cooke’s “Stand By Me” dedicated to the newlyweds that had people in tears.
It was an amazing day with amazing people, a unique location, autumn in all its glory, and gorgeous weather – and we were so fortunate to have been there to document it all.
How you met… Scott and Mel grew up only a few towns away from one another, went to high school around the corner from one another, college in the same state, and lived just a few blocks from away from each other in Hoboken, but actually didn’t meet until they went “online” in 2013.
How you got engaged… Scott had been planning the engagement for weeks, but once he got the ring, knew he couldn’t wait for any special surprise day and had to do it ASAP. So he took a cue from his own dad, who hid his mom’s ring in a meal one night, and hid the ring in Mel’s nightly bag of chocolates. For some reason, the night he got the ring, Mel didn’t have her typical chocolate craving, and Scott had to beg for her to take one. Eventually, she stuck her hand in the bag and the rest is history.
How you decided on the Smithville… When on vacation in LBI, on a rainy day, the historic town of Smithville was often a place to go. It wasn’t until Scott and Mel started looking for wedding venues that they realized a quaint, rustic inn was on the premises. Once they visited, they knew they had found a hidden treasure in South Jersey that was just their style.
